The Lawrence Chamber Orchestra is turning a new page and we have several exciting developments to report.
First, we’re changing our name! We are now the Lawrence Community Orchestra. We want our name to reflect the fact that this is truly a Lawrence orchestra, with most of the musicians being from Lawrence.
Second, we’ve hired new Music Directors — Rachel Dirks and Matthew Smith. Both live in Lawrence, hold conducting jobs here (Rachel at Lawrence High School, Matt at KU), and know many musicians and music lovers in the Lawrence area. They will be busy over the next few months preparing for a concert to introduce the new Lawrence Community Orchestra in April.
Third, we plan to branch out to include symphony-sized programs as well as concerts by chamber groups. Beginning in 2014-15, our goal is to present at least three concerts per year, in different seasons and with varied programs.
We are excited about our new course and need all your help to make it happen! First and foremost, we ask you all to help us get the word out, attend our performances and bring along a friend. We also hope you will continue to be, or become, a Friend of the Lawrence Community Orchestra! visit our Support page to find out how to make a contribution.
We are enthusiastic about our future and confident that together we can create a Lawrence Community Orchestra that is an active and visible part of Lawrence’s vibrant arts scene — a community orchestra that celebrates our local musicians, young and old.
Here is to our new journey!
Sincerely, and with great appreciation,
Allan Hanson, President,
and the entire Board
