Welcome
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the Lawrence Chamber Orchestra’s upcoming annual Baroque By Candlelight concert, to be performed on Saturday March 9th at 7:00 PM. We are so pleased to once again be performing in the sanctuary of Plymouth Congregational Church, a space that combines visual beauty with acoustic splendor, a truly ideal environment for baroque music. This year’s program promises to be truly spectacular, both in the works being played as well as the participants involved. Renowned countertenor Jay Carter will join the LCO to sing Bach’s stirring cantata “Widerstehe doch der Suende”, and favorite opera arias by Handel. The well known Concerto in D Minor, the 11th of the “L’estro Armonico” collection of Vivaldi, will feature LCO soloists, and we are pleased to welcome the select string ensemble of Lawrence High School to perform Bach’s Brandenberg Concerto No.3 in G, under the direction of LHS orchestra director Rachel Dirks. Finally, the LCO will perform the world premier of a work specially written for the occasion by KU composer Erin Tomkins, something of a contemporary composer’s “take” on baroque music. As always, the concert will be followed by a festive reception with fine wines and gourmet desserts.
We look forward to seeing you at this very special musical and culinary event, and we thank you for your continued support of the Lawrence Chamber Orchestra.
Sincerely,
Steven McDonald
Music Director
